Eight civilians killed in Mali airstrikes, Human Rights Watch alleges

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Russian-backed paramilitaries known as the Africa Corps of carrying out an airstrike in central Mali that resulted in the deaths of eight civilians, including three children. The incident occurred on June 15 in the village of Kyrnia, located in the Mopti region. The NGO emphasized that none of the victims were associated with armed groups operating in the area.

Civilian casualties in a targeted village

According to HRW’s findings, an Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft deployed at least two munitions over Kyrnia. The first strike struck the residence of the village chief, killing his wife and three children. The second targeted a nearby livestock market, claiming four additional lives and leaving several others injured. HRW’s investigation confirmed no armed individuals were among the casualties.

Africa Corps claims jihadist target amid conflicting accounts

The Africa Corps, which collaborates with Malian armed forces in counterterrorism operations, asserted on social media that the strike targeted a « terrorist gathering site. » However, HRW reported that while witnesses acknowledged the presence of Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) fighters in the village at the time, there is no evidence linking the civilian victims to active combat roles.

Africa Corps’ statements included imagery purportedly showing their operations against armed groups, though HRW’s on-ground assessments contradicted these claims regarding civilian harm.
