The Ministry of Health and Social Development in Mali officially took possession of 39 robust 4×4 all-terrain vehicles on Thursday, February 5, 2026. This significant acquisition is set to fortify the national health infrastructure and broaden access to crucial medical services, particularly immunization campaigns, across the nation’s most underserved regions. The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters within Bamako’s administrative city.
Valued at an estimated 689 million CFA francs, these vehicles represent a tangible outcome of the enduring and productive collaboration between Mali’s Ministry of Health and the Global Alliance for Vaccines (Gavi). Minister of Health, Assa Badiallo Touré, emphasized that this delivery is part of an ongoing commitment, recalling that 68 vehicles were previously secured in 2023 with World Bank funding to bolster COVID-19 vaccination efforts. She further indicated that additional essential equipment is slated for arrival throughout 2026.
Addressing the attendees, Minister Touré affirmed, « These new vehicles will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of our healthcare facilities, particularly in monitoring health interventions and expanding vaccination coverage. » She strongly urged all recipients and drivers to prioritize diligent maintenance of these assets. Despite current resource limitations, the ministry remains dedicated to expanding its service vehicle fleet, making the preservation of this equipment paramount.
Speaking on behalf of the technical and financial partners, Fosca Giulidori, UNICEF’s representative in Mali, underscored the profound symbolism of this milestone. « This event transcends a mere transfer of keys; it embodies a powerful act of international solidarity, showcasing Gavi’s unwavering support to accelerate global immunization efforts and ensure equitable access to life-saving vaccines, » she articulated.
According to Ms. Giulidori, these 39 vehicles are much more than transport; they are vital arteries for the healthcare system. Their deployment will enable the secure delivery of vaccines and other critical medical supplies to the most remote health centers, facilitate the outreach of mobile health teams into hard-to-reach communities, and strengthen essential programs such as immunization campaigns, nutritional monitoring, and various other vital care services for the population’s well-being.
