The incident occurred at a tavern in eMagogeni. In the footage, the suspect is seen repeatedly punching and kicking the elderly woman before striking her with a beer crate. Additionally, another individual can be heard laughing in the background as the victim lies helpless on the ground, unable to defend herself.
Pension dispute triggers violence in Mpumalanga
Preliminary investigations by law enforcement indicate that the altercation stemmed from a financial disagreement. The elderly woman reportedly went to the tavern to confront her grandson after discovering that her pension money—funds intended for groceries and electricity—had gone missing. The suspect then allegedly attacked her.
The widespread sharing of the video, coupled with swift action by local police, led to the identification and apprehension of the suspect. He is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before a provincial court soon on charges of assault and grievous bodily harm.
