The Philippine Ambassador to Morocco highlights remarkable progress in bilateral trade despite untapped potential in key sectors.

Half a century of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the Philippines has laid a solid foundation for future cooperation, according to Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja. Speaking during a recent interview, he emphasized the depth of bilateral ties built through high-level exchanges, strategic agreements, and strong people-to-people connections.

The ambassador highlighted a 50% surge in bilateral trade over the past five years, though both nations believe the current volume falls short of their shared potential. He noted that Morocco’s strategic position as a gateway to Africa and Europe complements the Philippines’ active role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), creating unique opportunities for expanded economic collaboration.

Key sectors primed for collaboration

The ambassador identified several high-potential sectors where cooperation could flourish:

  • Agriculture and food processing – Leveraging Morocco’s phosphate exports and the Philippines’ agricultural demand
  • Aerospace and electronics – Tapping into Morocco’s growing industrial base
  • Textile manufacturing – Exploring supply chain synergies

The Philippines ranks among the top importers of Moroccan phosphate, a critical component for fertilizer production. Ambassador Baja stressed that this trade relationship could serve as a model for broader industrial partnerships between the two nations.

Regional integration drives future cooperation

The 2023 Morocco-ASEAN sectoral partnership agreement represents a turning point in regional collaboration, offering new avenues for both bilateral and multilateral initiatives. Baja praised this framework as a catalyst for enhanced economic, political, and social stability across Africa.

“Regional integration will strengthen Africa’s economic resilience and political stability, fostering cultural prosperity across the continent,” he stated.

Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative gains international support

The Ambassador also addressed Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, a strategic project aimed at granting Sahelian states access to the Atlantic Ocean. He compared this initiative to ASEAN’s successful model of regional integration, predicting positive ripple effects across economic, political, and social spheres.

“This vision aligns perfectly with our support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Southern Provinces,” Baja noted, referring to the Philippines’ endorsement of the initiative during the 2022 visit by the Philippine Foreign Minister.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 was described as a game-changer in resolving the dispute, with the Philippines fully backing the UN-led political process to reach a definitive solution.

Cultural ties celebrated in new publication

A forthcoming book chronicling 50 years of Morocco-Philippines relations will be launched this week, showcasing the human connections that have shaped this enduring partnership. The publication goes beyond historical records to highlight the contributions of Moroccan and Filipino communities in bridging the two nations.

Ambassador Baja emphasized that these cultural ties form the bedrock of a relationship that extends far beyond mere economic transactions, fostering mutual understanding and long-term cooperation.
