Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for OIF leadership bid

The diplomatic ties between Gabon and Mauritania have reached new heights following a high-level meeting in Libreville. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the President of Gabon, welcomed Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, a special envoy dispatched by Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the Mauritanian Head of State.

Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, who also serves as Mauritania’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, conveyed a message underscoring her nation’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Gabon. The relationship between the two countries is anchored in shared values such as solidarity, mutual respect, and continuous dialogue on matters of mutual interest.

During the meeting, she formally presented Mauritania’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). This bid, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, is built on a strategic vision centered around three core pillars: coherence, balance, and tangible utility for member states.

The discussions highlighted the robust and seamless nature of Gabon and Mauritania’s diplomatic relations. President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s dedication to consensus-building and shared governance—a cornerstone of its continental policy.
