Minister of Sports condemns “unacceptable violence” during Nantes-Toulouse Ligue 1 clash
Nantes supporters stormed the pitch just 20 minutes into their match against Toulouse on Sunday, leading to the game’s definitive suspension.
Marina Ferrari, the Minister of Sports, Youth and Associative Life, strongly denounced the “unacceptable scenes of violence” that erupted on Sunday, May 17, following the abrupt halt of the Nantes-Toulouse football match. This incident occurred during the 34th and final day of Ligue 1, when a segment of Nantes supporters invaded the pitch and launched flares onto the playing field, forcing the complete suspension of the game.
The Minister emphasized that such violent acts “have absolutely no place in sport or in our Republic.” She added, “I condemn these actions with the utmost firmness and extend my support to the players, as well as to the supporters who came to experience this moment peacefully.” Such disruptions, unfortunately, resonate globally and are often a topic of concern in sports discussions, including those found in pan-African current affairs and African society news, highlighting the universal challenge of maintaining order in sports events.
Ferrari concluded her statement by asserting, “Everyone must take responsibility to ensure the identification of those responsible for these violent acts, who must be sanctioned with the greatest severity.” At the time of the pitch invasion, in the 22nd minute, the score stood at 0-0. Nantes, already relegated to Ligue 2 and sitting 17th, and Toulouse, in 10th place with nothing left to play for, were both without significant stakes in the outcome. Supporters from the Tribune Loire at the Stade de la Beaujoire were the first to rush onto the field. After several minutes, the Nantes fans eventually returned to their stands, which were then secured by numerous CRS officers, though some minor skirmishes were unavoidable.
Notably, the Minister offered no comment regarding other incidents that marred the evening, such as the pitch invasion by Nice supporters following their match against Auxerre.
