On Saturday, OGC Nice hosted FC Lorient for their Ligue 1 opening fixture, with both teams ultimately sharing the points in a 0-0 stalemate.

Having concluded the previous season in 16th place, Nice aimed to ignite a fresh start and firmly assert their position in Ligue 1. This new resolve was crucial for their inaugural match against FC Lorient, a team that impressed last season under Olivier Pantaloni, who now manages the Aiglons.

This initial encounter, held in memory of Eric Roy, saw the Corsican tactician deploy his customary 3-4-3 formation. Seventeen-year-old Junior Mandza, who had shown promise during pre-season, started in defense. In midfield, Everton Pereira was chosen over Issiaga Camara. The Aiglons’ coach also placed his trust in Gauthier Hein, forming an attacking trio alongside Sofian Diop and Zoumana Diallo, with Jonathan Clauss leading the team as captain.

A notable statistic: Lorient has not secured a victory on Nice’s home turf since April 2014, when they won 2-1.

An animated start, but lacking realism

Following an initial ten-minute period of cautious play where Lorient appeared more composed, Théo Le Bris delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank towards Koné, who narrowly missed making contact. Nice quickly asserted themselves; in the 14th minute, Sofiane Diop capitalized on a slip by Kouassi within the penalty area, unleashing a shot that was saved by Mvogo. This was swiftly followed by another opportunity, as attempts from Gauthier Hein and Jonathan Clauss were blocked by the resilient Breton defense.

However, complacency proved a risk. In the 21st minute, Coulibaly conceded a perilous ball just outside his own box, which Makengo seized and fired narrowly wide of the top corner. Goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf then made another miscue in his distribution. Fortunately for him, he redeemed himself with an impressive save against Bernardeau. Just before halftime, Everton Pereira believed he had broken the deadlock with a deflection from a corner, only for a foul on Cadiou to be called.

“We had some scares, but that’s part of our game,” Antoine Mendy commented at halftime. “We created chances in attack; it’s just about fine-tuning those small details to convert them.”

A less generous second half

Upon returning from the locker rooms, the match’s tempo shifted dramatically. Both teams seemed to neutralize each other for an extended period. Around the hour mark, Noah Cadiou and then Mamadou Koné tested the Aiglons’ goalkeeper with a well-orchestrated attacking sequence, but he stood firm.

Substitute forward Nathan Ngoumou, introduced later in the game, had his chance. In the 83rd minute, he attempted to carve out a shooting angle within the box, but his effort was once again blocked. The final scare arrived in stoppage time when, from a precise cross, Lorient’s attacker Tosin launched a powerful header that sailed just over Yehvann Diouf’s goal.

Sofiane Diop highlighted ball distribution as a key area for improvement, noting its frequent clumsiness during the match: “We cannot afford to hand ammunition to our opponents every weekend.”

This result marks the sixth consecutive season that the Gym has failed to win its opening fixture. Next week, Nice will travel to the capital to face Paris FC. That match is scheduled for Sunday, August 30th, at 3 PM.
