Despite Matvey Safonov’s impressive displays in goal for Paris Saint-Germain since stepping in for Lucas Chevalier, his position as the primary shot-stopper for the upcoming season remains uncertain. Reports indicate that sporting advisor Luis Campos is actively pursuing a significant deal to bring FC Porto’s highly-rated goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, to the Parisian club.

Following their recent triumph in securing the French championship after a crucial victory against RC Lens, Luis Campos had previously stated a temporary halt to transfer discussions. “Our transfer market has been completely paused for several weeks,” he asserted, emphasizing the club’s singular focus on the upcoming Champions League final on May 30th against Arsenal. However, this strategic pause does not appear to have deterred the Parisians from formulating precise plans for their summer recruitment objectives.
Paris Saint-Germain targets Diogo Costa
Sources close to FC Porto, specifically the specialized platform Mercado Azul, suggest that the PSG is keenly interested in acquiring Diogo Costa, the celebrated goalkeeper of the newly crowned Portuguese champions. This pursuit implies a potential shift in the club’s goalkeeping strategy, possibly indicating a lack of long-term confidence in Matvey Safonov, despite his flawless performances, or a decision not to reintegrate Lucas Chevalier, who was signed for 40M€ plus bonuses last summer. Diogo Costa, who extended his contract last December until 2030, notably saw his release clause adjusted downwards, now standing at a substantial 60M€.
A transfer finalized before the World Cup?
Such a revision of his release clause could be interpreted as a clear signal of an impending departure. Mercado Azul further reveals that the PSG has intensified negotiations, aiming to finalize Diogo Costa‘s transfer before the World Cup commences on June 11th. The club’s intention appears to be a swift resolution to their crucial goalkeeping situation. It is also worth noting that Diogo Costa‘s agent is none other than Jorge Mendes, a figure well-acquainted with Luis Campos. This existing professional relationship could significantly streamline discussions for a transfer involving the goalkeeper, who is set to be Portugal’s starting custodian this summer.
