Post-match chaos in besançon: police injured, mayor condemns violence

Disorder erupted following a Champions League match, initially near the Robert Schwint bridge in Besançon, where a group of roughly fifty individuals obstructed traffic. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, officers were met with projectiles hurled by the crowd, predominantly composed of minors. Five police personnel sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. Motorists caught in the gridlock witnessed young people climbing onto their vehicles, resulting in at least one car being damaged. The group subsequently moved into the city center, gathering notably around Place de la Révolution.

Several thoroughfares, including Grande rue, Battant, and rue Courbet, were affected by the deployment of tear gas. Patrons enjoying outdoor terraces and other passersby sought refuge inside establishments, aided by local restaurateurs, due to the irritant gas. Residents of Besançon also reported finding their electric bicycles overturned and vandalized, while various pieces of urban furniture suffered damage.

Besançon’s mayor denounces the violence

The acts of violence were swiftly condemned by Ludovic Fagaut, the Mayor of Besançon, who posted his disapproval on social media. He asserted, “Nothing can justify exploiting a popular sporting event to engage in destruction, disturb public order, and cultivate a sense of insecurity.” Mayor Fagaut affirmed that efforts are underway to identify those responsible, ensuring they will be brought to justice.

riot control police (CRS) were deployed to the scene. While an estimated 600 to 800 people were circulating in the city after the match, up to a hundred young individuals became aggressive at various points, with about fifty directly confronting the police.

As of now, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with the incidents, comprising four minors and one adult.
