Sahel: AES highlights security progress and regional integration

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily consolidating its achievements across multiple critical domains, as highlighted by Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, during a recent broadcast interview.

Unified Security Framework Strengthens Regional Stability

According to the Nigerien diplomat, the AES’s three founding members—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—have bolstered their military cooperation through the establishment of a unified force and a joint operational headquarters in Niamey. This integrated command structure serves as the backbone for coordinating security operations across the region.

Diplomatic Unity Boosts International Influence

The AES is also advancing its diplomatic cohesion, with member states adopting a shared foreign policy approach. This includes the circulation of a unified diplomatic passport and enhanced coordination among their international representations. The alliance’s goal is to present a cohesive front in global forums, ensuring that the Sahel’s collective interests are effectively advocated.

Beyond Security: Economic and Media Integration Takes Shape

While security remains a priority, the AES is expanding its integration efforts to include economic and media initiatives. A dedicated development investment bank is in the works to fund infrastructure and social projects across member states. Additionally, a suite of joint media outlets—spanning television, radio, and print—is being developed to strengthen institutional communication and counter misinformation campaigns targeting the Sahel.

Sovereignty and Global Recognition

The AES reiterates that the recognition of international organizations falls under the sovereign authority of its member states, underscoring the alliance’s commitment to self-determination.

Solidarity in Action: Honoring a Regional Military Leader

A high-level AES delegation, led by General Célestin Simporé, paid a visit to Bamako to express solidarity with Mali following the passing of General Sadio Camara. The delegation, received by Malian transitional President Assimi Goïta, conveyed condolences from Burkina Faso and Niger.

During the meeting, the delegation paid tribute to General Camara’s legacy, recognizing his pivotal role in advancing Sahelian military cooperation. They also reaffirmed the AES’s unwavering resolve to combat armed groups and intensify efforts against terrorist threats in the region.
