Cameroonian activist Salomon Beas criticizes opposition leaders whose sole focus is presidential ambitions
In a recent Facebook post, former Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) activist Salomon Beas criticized opposition leaders who prioritize becoming president over meaningful democratic change.
“In a political landscape where civil servants and administrators suddenly emerge as leaders without proper transition, democracy struggles to take off. These individuals are solely focused on becoming president without any real commitment to transforming the mindset of the people they claim to lead. They demand unwavering support for their ambitions while dismissing the aspirations of others. Driven by urgency, they surround themselves with followers, suppressing dissenting voices to maintain control.”
“Over time, this approach erodes core democratic values, replacing them with empty rhetoric and a lack of initiative. Their projects become obsolete the moment they retire, leaving behind a political field dominated by opportunists devoid of conviction.”
According to Beas, true leaders must reject authoritarian tendencies and embrace the essence of democracy.
“When opposition figures mirror the regime they oppose, dictatorships thrive. Political reproduction becomes a self-sustaining model that stifles democracy for years. A leader who fails to recognize that democracy thrives on shared convictions, vision, and collective effort—while accepting that even junior collaborators may have stronger political ambitions—will ultimately fail. Success in politics isn’t about personal achievement but about inspiring others to rise above you.”
“Central Africa suffers from a dangerous affliction that kills democracy: party leaders who behave like revivalist pastors, seeking blind followers instead of committed activists and potential political challengers.”
