The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, issued a statement on Thursday addressing the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared the constitutional reform bill—passed by lawmakers—unconstitutional. The Pastef leader acknowledged the decision of the seven-member body, emphasizing that its ruling applies to everyone.
« Despite differing interpretations of the reasoning behind the decision, one thing remains clear: this ruling applies to everyone. Case closed, » Sonko wrote in a public statement.
In his remarks, the Assembly Speaker underscored the importance of institutional roles. « When each institution fulfills its mandate within its designated scope, no crisis can arise, » he noted.
Sonko also reaffirmed the parliament’s commitment to its duties. « The National Assembly will continue to carry out its mission in full: laws will be debated, passed, or rejected to honor the commitments made to the resilient and dignified people of Senegal, » he stated.
