Sénégal: ousmane sonko addresses constitutional council’s pivotal ruling

Ousmane Sonko, who presides over Sénégal’s National Assembly, issued a statement this Thursday regarding the Constitutional Council’s ruling. The high court deemed the constitutional reform bill, previously passed by lawmakers, as unconstitutional. As the prominent leader of Pastef, Sonko acknowledged the opinion delivered by the esteemed members of the high court, asserting that their verdict is unequivocally binding on all parties.

“Irrespective of the discussions and opinions that may arise from the stated reasons, one truth remains paramount: this decision is binding on everyone! Let it be noted!” Ousmane Sonko declared in a public statement.

From the perspective of the National Assembly’s president, this recent turn of events serves as a crucial reminder that “when institutions operate within their defined roles, each performing its duties, the emergence of any crisis can be averted.”

Furthermore, Sonko reiterated the legislative body’s steadfast commitment to fulfilling its mandates. “The National Assembly will persist in diligently executing its entrusted mission,” he affirmed, “enacting or rejecting legislation to uphold the pledges made to the resilient and honorable people of Sénégal.”
