Morocco declared CAN 2025 champion: Senegal contests decision at Court of Arbitration for Sport
Stripped of their African champion title by the Confederation of African Football, Senegal has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which pledges to render a decision “as quickly as possible”.
Senegal has formally filed an appeal. One week after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced its decision to strip Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, citing their walk-off during the final against Morocco, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed this Wednesday that it had “registered an appeal from the Senegalese Federation.”
This appeal had been anticipated for several days. Unsurprisingly, Senegal seeks the annulment of CAF’s ruling and the reinstatement of their title, which they earned on the field in extra time through a goal by Pape Gueye. The final was marred by significant controversy late in the match when the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco, which Brahim Diaz subsequently missed. In protest, the Senegalese team briefly left the pitch before returning minutes later.
“An arbitral panel of the CAS will be appointed to rule on this matter, after which a procedural calendar will be established,” the institution stated in a press release. No hearing date has yet been set.
“The CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of specialized and independent arbitrators,” affirmed Matthieu Reeb, Director General of CAS. “We understand that teams and fans desire to know the final decision as quickly as possible, and we will ensure that the arbitration procedure is conducted in the shortest possible time, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
