Senegal’s Ousmane Sonko champions united and sovereign Africa at UPA’s 85th session
The 85th session of the Executive Committee of the Pan-African Parliamentarians’ Union (UPA) kicked off in Dakar on June 3-4, 2026, with a powerful message from Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly. Sonko welcomed delegates from across Africa, emphasizing the urgency of continental unity in the face of shared challenges.
Strengthening African solidarity through parliamentary cooperation
In his opening address, Sonko expressed his delight and pride in hosting the gathering of African parliamentarians in the capital. He extended warm, fraternal greetings to all participants, representing diverse nations from the continent, reaffirming Senegal’s commitment to fostering deeper ties within Africa.
The Senegalese parliamentary leader highlighted the need for enhanced parliamentary collaboration, particularly amid pressing political, economic, and security challenges facing the continent. He stressed that these times demand collective action, saying, « At a juncture when our continent faces unprecedented trials, the strengthening of parliamentary cooperation has never been more vital. »
Panafrican vision for an autonomous and integrated continent
Sonko reaffirmed his unwavering belief in the Pan-African ideal, asserting that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves. He called for progress rooted in the continent’s shared values, aspirations, and sovereign interests, rejecting external dependency.
The National Assembly President expressed hope that the Dakar deliberations would serve as a catalyst for greater continental integration. He underscored the importance of advancing shared ambitions that resonate with the hopes of African peoples, fostering a stronger, more cohesive continent.
Concluding his remarks, Sonko delivered a resounding call for unity: « Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa. »
