Sonko warns new prime minister amid political tensions in Senegal

In a sharp public statement, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has taken aim at Senegal’s new Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo, issuing stern warnings over recent remarks that have fueled political tensions. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sonko made it clear that his patience with what he considers provocative discourse is wearing thin.

The former Prime Minister did not mince words, advising his successor to stick to what he knows best. “I urge him to confine himself to the realm of technocracy. If he identifies as a technocrat, let him act accordingly,” Sonko declared, signaling a clear divide between political rhetoric and governance.

Beyond the professional advice, Sonko went on to accuse Al Aminou Lo of playing a pivotal role in the growing rift between the ruling Pastef party and the President. “We are fully aware of the part he has played in the tensions between Pastef and the Head of State. Until now, we have chosen not to disclose all the details. It’s time for him to step back,” he asserted.

The veteran politician also criticized the Prime Minister’s public posturing during the announcement of the new government lineup. “Yesterday, I heard him lecturing others. Perhaps he should start by applying those same lessons to himself,” Sonko remarked, underscoring a perceived lack of humility in governance.

In a final warning shot, Sonko hinted at undisclosed information that could further escalate the situation. “We know everything. We’ve held back so far, but we won’t tolerate any further provocation,” he declared, leaving the political arena on high alert.
