Tchad’s first museum night celebrates cultural heritage

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism Development, Culture and Crafts, the House of Cultural Heritage of Chad, through the National Museum of Chad, hosted the inaugural Museum Night in N’Djamena on May 18, 2026. This special evening marked the International Museum Day, transforming the museum into a vibrant hub of cultural expression after sunset.

As the clock struck 8 PM, the atmosphere buzzed with energy and tradition. The National Ballet of Chad greeted guests at the entrance with a dazzling display of traditional dances, immediately immersing visitors in the country’s rich rhythmic heritage.

« The traditional dances are breathtaking—I’ve barely stepped inside the National Museum, but I’m already captivated by these performances, » shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, a wide-eyed attendee who couldn’t hide her enthusiasm.

The event was carefully curated into multiple thematic zones, allowing guests to explore the museum’s permanent exhibits at their own pace. Highlights included interactive guided tours around historical artifacts, storytelling sessions led by griots and museum guides, screenings of documentaries showcasing both tangible and intangible cultural treasures, and a variety of live artistic performances.

Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, Director of the National Ballet of Chad, emphasized the significance of the initiative.

« Our traditional dances are a vital part of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with objects our ancestors once used daily—this event offers the younger generation a rare chance to connect with these history-laden pieces. We hope the Museum Night becomes a quarterly celebration, a unique platform to elevate and preserve our cultural identity. »

The evening also drew the attention of the French Ambassador to Chad and members of his delegation, underscoring the global appreciation for efforts to safeguard and promote Chad’s cultural legacy.
