The partnership between Togo and the European Union has seen significant growth, according to outgoing Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones
During his farewell visit to the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, Ambassador Ceri Jones highlighted the strengthening of the partnership in various domains such as sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security.
The diplomat stressed that this renewed commitment will support economic growth and job creation in strategic sectors, including energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Ambassador Ceri Jones also emphasized the importance of cooperation on peace and security issues, recalling that the EU has strengthened its support for the Togolese armed forces to combat terrorism and strengthen maritime security.
The European Union’s cooperation with Togo is guided by the 2021-2027 Joint Development Cooperation Plan (DCP), which has allocated €201 million. This framework focuses on human development, inclusive socio-economic growth, sustainable agriculture, and responsible resource management, as well as consolidating a peaceful and resilient society based on inclusive governance.
The EU-Togo cooperation has recently gained momentum with the launch of a tripartite mechanism involving the Togolese government, the European Team, and Eurocham Togo. This framework aims to make business climate more attractive, stimulate European investments, and accompany economic reforms undertaken by the Togolese government.
The goal is to create jobs, promote private sector development, and transform Togo’s economy through concrete outcomes. According to both parties, this partnership will continue beyond the departure of Ambassador Ceri Jones.
