Togo has taken a significant stride in expanding its higher education landscape with the official launch of the University of Datcha. During a cabinet meeting, the government confirmed the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as the inaugural president of this emerging public institution. Positioned in the Plateaux Region, the university marks a strategic investment in the country’s academic future.
Leading the way as a visionary academic leader
Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian specializing in political history and international relations, previously served as the Director of Academic Affairs and Student Services at the University of Lomé. His deep expertise in academic administration positions him perfectly to steer the University of Datcha through its foundational phase.
Supporting his leadership is Professor Kperkouma Walla, a renowned botanist and plant ecologist, who has been named the first vice-president. Together, this dynamic leadership team will establish the administrative, scientific, and pedagogical frameworks essential for the university’s growth.
Addressing educational bottlenecks and fostering local growth
The University of Datcha was established in September 2023 to address pressing challenges in Togo’s higher education sector:
- Relieving pressure on existing campuses: Alleviate overcrowding at the universities in Lomé and Kara by decentralizing enrollment opportunities.
- Strengthening regional development: Align academic programs with the economic, social, and cultural needs of the Plateaux Region to drive sustainable growth.
