Willy Mengue, a leading figure opposing Maurice Kamto’s return to the presidency of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), has requested that Equinoxe TV provide balanced coverage of the issue.
The call for balance comes after Vice-President Mamadou Mota appeared on the program “La Vérité en Face” on Sunday evening.
According to Mengue, this is necessary for “fairness in information treatment,” “the pursuit of journalistic truth,” and “the right to information.”
“It is urgent that, failing a direct debate between the two factions, a substantial right of reply be organized in response to the program ‘Vérité en Face’ dedicated to the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto at the head of the MRC. You kindly gave a microphone to political friend Mamadou Mota on this relevant matter; the quest for truth demands you offer the same service to the protesters, whom I represent,” wrote Mengue in an open letter addressed to Equinoxe TV’s CEO.
During the Sunday show, Mamadou Mota defended the return to the MRC presidency, a move that Mengue formally contests, calling it a “fraudulent return.”
“Equinoxe TV is reputed to be ‘the channel of the people that reports beyond the image.’ Your coverage of the manipulation of the MRC’s founding texts to facilitate the fraudulent return of a resignee to the party’s leadership will be fair and equitable only if this claimed right of reply is granted. The Cameroonian people are watching you on this matter.”
