Algeria and Chad launch joint power plant to strengthen strategic ties

The new power plant gifted by Algeria to the Republic of Chad marks a significant milestone in deepening relations between Algiers and N’Djamena.

On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside his Chadian counterpart and head of government Allamaye Halina, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for this solidarity power plant. With a production capacity of 40 megawatts, the facility embodies the growing partnership between the two nations.

Sonelgaz International entrusted with building the power plant

This project represents a new chapter in the strengthening of ties between Algiers and N’Djamena, in line with the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony began with a detailed technical briefing covering the project’s various engineering aspects, implementation stages, and operational outlook, highlighting the infrastructure’s importance in bolstering energy cooperation between both countries.

The power plant project is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which has awarded the construction contract to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the plant aims to meet the growing demand for electricity and enhance supply security for the capital N’Djamena and surrounding regions. Charged by the president to represent Algeria on this occasion, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb underscored the strategic significance of this project, described as one of the first concrete outcomes of commitments made between the two countries’ leaders.

Forging a robust strategic partnership

In his address, Ghrieb stressed the special attention President Tebboune places on strengthening cooperative and solidarity ties with fellow African nations, as well as his personal commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts, particularly in vital sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions. He noted that this achievement “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brotherly countries” and realizes the ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership based on effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”

“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains committed to strengthening the bonds of fraternity between our two peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” he stated, adding that this momentum contributes to the shared goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” For him, this project is one of the first tangible results of the new dynamic sparked by the Chadian president’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. “The important discussions held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious cooperation agreements and programs covering several strategic sectors,” he informed.

Cooperation promoting regional stability

The prime minister also emphasized the African dimension of this initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements directly benefiting citizens,” he stated. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that create wealth for African peoples.”

It is worth noting that this vision fits within a broader approach to continental integration. In this regard, Sifi Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay special attention to major structuring projects.” “The trans-Saharan road, fiber optic interconnection, as well as strengthening air transport and logistics, will help open up our interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment,” he stressed.

African solutions to African problems

Turning to regional issues, the prime minister reaffirmed the convergence of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental matters,” he assured. He added: “This approach reflects our shared conviction about the unity of destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems, respecting state sovereignty.”

Therefore, Ghrieb reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad in its development efforts. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s constant commitment to support the Republic of Chad and strengthen bilateral partnership for the development, stability, and prosperity of our two countries,” he declared.
