Arthur Zagré commits to Burkina Faso national team

Arthur Zagré, a left-back who developed through the Paris Saint-Germain youth system and represented France at the junior level, has officially decided to change his sporting nationality to represent Burkina Faso.

The 24-year-old defender, who earned 23 caps and scored two goals for the French U18 and U19 squads, is preparing for a new international chapter. Currently playing for Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eredivisie, where he has recorded three goals and two assists this season, the versatile player has chosen to play for the Burkina Faso national team, the land of his heritage. Sources close to the Burkinabè federation have confirmed this shift in allegiance.

Under the leadership of head coach Amir Abdou since last March, the Étalons are expected to integrate this new talent as early as June. The team is scheduled to face Belarus and Russia in upcoming friendly matches, providing an immediate opportunity for Zagré to make his debut.

A career launched in Ligue 1

While primarily a left-sided defender, Arthur Zagré is also capable of playing further up the wing or as a defensive midfielder. He is currently in his third season in the Netherlands with Excelsior Rotterdam. His professional journey began prominently during the 2019-2020 season when he made his Ligue 1 debut for Paris Saint-Germain under Thomas Tuchel. Shortly after his breakthrough, the Neuilly-sur-Seine native made a high-profile move to AS Monaco.

Following his time in Monaco, the left-footed player gained experience through loan spells at Dijon and Utrecht before finding stability in the Dutch port city with Excelsior Rotterdam. Known for his powerful striking ability despite his smaller stature (1.68m), Zagré is nearing the end of his current contract, which expires this June. While a club transfer appears likely this summer, his immediate focus shifts to his first call-up with the Burkina Faso national squad.
