Benin new government outlines key priorities at first cabinet meeting

Bénin’s new leadership sets ambitious agenda for 2026-2033 term

Romuald Wadagni, President of the Republic of Bénin, convened the inaugural session of his seven-year mandate on May 28, 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s governance. Just days after his official inauguration at the Palais de la Marina, the newly appointed cabinet gathered to receive the President’s strategic directives for the 2026-2033 term.

The head of state began by commending the ministers, emphasizing that their appointment is not a personal privilege but a national mission. He underscored the weight of their responsibilities, urging them to uphold unwavering integrity, demonstrate unrelenting sobriety in decision-making, and prioritize national solidarity over partisan or individual interests.

Equity, security, and development: the pillars of the new mandate

President Wadagni outlined three core priorities for his administration. First, he called for accelerated efforts to bridge regional disparities by fostering balanced development across all communes. This includes modernizing infrastructure, enhancing access to essential public services, and increasing investments in local governance.

The second pillar focuses on national security, a critical concern following recent armed incidents in the northern regions. The President directed the government to sustain robust defense measures, reinforcing the protection of Bénin’s territory amid ongoing security challenges.

Streamlined governance for efficiency and accountability

The administration also announced structural reforms to improve governance. Starting in June 2026, the Council of Ministers will meet monthly, on the first Wednesday of each month, with additional extraordinary sessions scheduled as needed. The Interministerial Committee will convene twice a month, on the first and third Mondays, to ensure coordinated policymaking.

To tackle complex issues, joint meetings between the Council of Ministers, the Interministerial Committee, and sectoral ministers will be introduced, allowing for more comprehensive and collaborative decision-making.

This historic first cabinet meeting signals the official launch of Bénin’s new seven-year governance cycle, following President Wadagni’s swearing-in on May 24, 2026.
