The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing recently unveiled key outcomes from Chad’s involvement at the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The minister shared insights during an internal briefing at their office, attended by local delegates who took part in the mission.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the deputy mayor of N’Djamena, officials from the National Housing and Real Estate Development Corporation (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat. The forum’s agenda focused on critical issues such as affordable housing, sustainable urban growth, and climate-resilient city planning.
By joining this global gathering, Chad amplified its presence in international urban policy discussions and contributed to shaping strategies for African urban development. A dedicated pavilion showcased the country’s flagship urban and housing initiatives, highlighting progress made in addressing housing shortages and infrastructure challenges.
One of the most significant outcomes was the confirmation of an upcoming high-level visit to Chad by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, scheduled for early September 2026. This visit will provide a firsthand assessment of the country’s urban landscape and review several project proposals submitted by Chadian authorities.
Additionally, Chad has been selected as one of the top ten nations eligible for the UN Green Climate Fund, thanks to a collaborative effort involving Kenya. This milestone could unlock substantial financial resources for urban resilience projects, particularly in flood-prone areas.
During the forum, productive discussions were held with counterparts from Kenya and Morocco to explore new partnerships in urban planning, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. Future joint missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are in the pipeline to strengthen these collaborations.
The minister emphasized that this mission represents a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to convert these opportunities into impactful, long-term urban development projects that benefit local communities. Chad’s participation in WUF13 underscores its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-adaptive urban futures, aligned with the national vision set by the President of the Republic.
