In a strengthened drive against transnational organized crime, the Republican Police in Benin is significantly stepping up its operations. Their aim is to dismantle criminal networks and track down individuals attempting to evade justice by crossing borders. The objective is clear: to prevent Benin from becoming a safe harbor for those sought by international law enforcement agencies. As part of this broader strategy, BCN-INTERPOL Cotonou, mirroring the efforts of other specialized units within the Directorate of Judicial Police, executed a series of coordinated actions between April 13 and 19, 2026. These operations successfully concluded the flight of three fugitives actively pursued by multiple nations.
On April 15, a Nigerian national, wanted by authorities in his home country for alleged involvement in several murder cases committed in Lagos during 2023 and 2024, was apprehended in Cotonou. This individual, whose escape had garnered significant media attention from the Lagos State Police, was located in a Cotonou hotel where he had been concealing himself.

Later the same day, another operation led to the arrest of a suspect at Bernardin Gantin International Airport. This individual was being sought by United States authorities in connection with a large-scale fraud investigation. He had just entered Benin, having hastily fled the United States to escape American justice.
A few days later, on April 19, 2026, a French national, also wanted by France for suspected involvement in transnational organized crime activities, was arrested in Cotonou. This individual had utilized various false identities, which had previously allowed him to evade police checks. However, weeks of discreet yet persistent surveillance by specialized units of the Republican Police ultimately led to his precise location and exposure.
Following his apprehension, the Nigerian suspect was promptly transferred to his country’s authorities, in strict adherence to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) criminal police cooperation agreement. Extradition proceedings for the other two detainees are currently underway, following due process.
Through these precisely executed interventions and the subsequent transfer of the apprehended individuals, the Republican Police emphatically reaffirms its unwavering commitment to combating transnational organized crime. It underscores its steadfast dedication to international police collaboration and, most crucially, its resolute determination not to offer sanctuary to international criminals, irrespective of their origin or the charges they face.
