Cameroon’s Defense Minister spearheads historic agreement with Turkey

Under the highest directives from President Paul Biya, Commander-in-Chief of the Cameroonian Armed Forces, Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo has concluded a landmark military and financial cooperation agreement with Turkey during an official visit to Ankara.

The pact, signed by Cameroon’s Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo and his Turkish counterpart Yaşar Güler, represents a strategic milestone in bilateral relations. Deputy Turkish Defense Minister Musa Heybet was also present during the negotiations, which focused on strengthening financial and military collaboration mechanisms between the two nations.

Beyond the signing ceremony, Minister Beti Assomo visited the National Defense University of Turkey (MSÜ), a premier institution in military leadership training. Discussions centered on three critical pillars: expanding bilateral military cooperation, enhancing training for Cameroonian Armed Forces officers, and deepening strategic ties between the countries.

This visit builds upon an existing partnership in which Turkey has been training Cameroonian military personnel at MSÜ facilities for years. During Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler’s visit to Yaoundé in May 2025, Joseph Beti Assomo publicly acknowledged Ankara’s commitment to providing free training for Cameroonian cadets and non-commissioned officers in Turkish military academies.

The newly signed agreement elevates this cooperation to new heights, reinforcing Cameroon’s strategic alliances. Following partnerships with France, the United States, and Israel, Turkey now stands as a key military partner for Cameroon, offering a comprehensive approach that combines training, financing, and operational cooperation.
