Cameroon’s national cocoa and coffee board (ONCC), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), successfully concluded a training program for 35 export warehouse verifiers in Douala on June 26, 2026.
Over three intensive days, from June 24 to 26, participants honed their expertise in crucial areas such as sampling methodologies, stringent quality control protocols, and efficient management of cocoa storage facilities designated for export. Didime Olivier Tchoumi, UNIDO’s principal technical advisor, affirmed that this strategic initiative is designed to elevate the global market competitiveness of both Cameroonian cocoa and coffee. This vital program forms an integral part of the PICS-Cameroun project, generously supported by funding from Japan.
This development builds upon a significant international triumph for Cameroonian cocoa. On Tuesday, February 20, 2026, Cameroon secured a gold medal at the 10th edition of the prestigious Cacao of Excellence Awards, held concurrently with the renowned Chocoa Trade Fair. This annual gathering for the cocoa and chocolate industry showcased approximately 191 samples from 45 different origins, each meticulously assessed for its inherent quality, sustainability practices, and distinct sensory profile.
Out of all the entries, only 50 select lots earned distinction from an international panel of sensory and industry experts. Notably, sample number 167, proudly representing Cameroon, ascended to the top of the podium in the highly competitive Africa & Indian Ocean category.
For Cameroon, this gold medal victory resonates powerfully, following a bronze recognition achieved in 2023. This trajectory unequivocally confirms the nation’s upward trend and its enhanced qualitative competitiveness for its cocoa beans within the discerning “fine and flavour” premium market segments. In these specialized markets, criteria such as exquisite taste, undeniable authenticity, and robust sustainability practices are paramount, often commanding significantly higher prices compared to traditional commodity cocoa.
Beyond the prestige of a single medal, this significant distinction firmly solidifies Cameroon’s reputation as a prime terroir capable of cultivating exceptional cocoas. This aligns perfectly with the burgeoning demand from high-end chocolatiers and specialized international markets. Furthermore, this recognition is poised to stimulate increased investment in critical areas like traceability systems, advanced technical training, and the structured development of cooperative organizations.
