Tchad/Condamnation confirmée de Succès Masra : Les Transformateurs dénoncent un verdict politique
On Thursday, May 21st, Chad’s Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by former Prime Minister and leader of the Les Transformateurs party, Succès Masra. This ruling definitively upheld his 20-year prison sentence, a decision that immediately sparked widespread outrage and disappointment among his supporters.
In a statement, Les Transformateurs asserted that the Chadian judiciary “missed an opportunity to make history” by confirming the verdict initially handed down against their president last year.
The party vehemently condemned the trial’s deeply political nature, emphasizing that through “this decision, the Supreme Court once again confirms the profoundly political character of President Masra’s arbitrary detention, which has now lasted 371 days.” They contend this action aims to remove a prominent opposition figure from the national political stage.
The opposition party also criticized the judiciary for disregarding numerous voices globally that had called for Masra’s release, denounced the injustice, and reiterated fundamental principles of the rule of law. Furthermore, supporters of the former Chadian Prime Minister expressed significant concern regarding his health, which is reportedly in a “considerably degraded” state.
Masra had been found guilty of criminal association and complicity in murder following the Mandakao massacre, an incident that occurred in May 2025 in the village located within the Logone occidental province. With all domestic legal avenues now exhausted, the opposition leader’s legal team is reportedly contemplating taking the case to international jurisdictions.
