Dakar court steps into action over Sonko’s Touba remarks

The Grandchildren of Serigne Touba Collective has lodged a formal complaint against Ousmane Sonko following controversial statements regarding alleged illicit funds entering Touba. The group seeks a thorough investigation to verify the claims, which they argue tarnish the reputation of Senegal’s sacred city and its residents.
Legal action targets Sonko over Touba allegations
The Grandchildren of Serigne Touba Collective has filed a lawsuit at the Dakar High Court, registered under case number 12562. This follows remarks attributed to Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, made during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters last weekend. He reportedly claimed that “dirty money” had flowed into Touba, Senegal’s revered spiritual center.
Through spokespeople Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, the collective asserts that Sonko’s words constitute a direct assault on Touba’s honor, reputation, and the dignity of its people. They emphasize that the city, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on principles of integrity, faith, and justice.
Call for transparency and accountability
The complainants argue that Sonko’s allegations cast an unwarranted shadow over Touba’s moral and spiritual standing. They urge the prosecutor to initiate a comprehensive inquiry to assess the validity of the claims and explore potential legal consequences. Their demands include summoning Sonko to clarify his statements and provide supporting evidence.
The group insists that if evidence supports the allegations, legal action should be pursued under defamation, dissemination of false information, or other applicable offenses under Senegalese law.
