DRC Ebola Outbreak Claims Over 500 Lives

The DRC’s Ebola Crisis Deepens

More than 500 people have died in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.

As of now, there are 1,561 confirmed cases, including 506 deaths. Additionally, 253 individuals have been declared cured, while 628 patients with confirmed cases are currently being treated in isolation or hospitalization.

The outbreak was declared on May 15 and has since spread to 36 health zones in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, where community transmission of the virus continues unabated.

Ituri remains the most affected province, accounting for more than 91% of confirmed cases and nearly 84% of deaths recorded since the start of the outbreak, according to Congolese authorities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is continuing to evolve rapidly and sustainably spreading. As of July 1, at least 10,821 individuals who have been in contact with confirmed cases are being monitored in Ituri and North Kivu as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
