DRC military tightens smartphone restrictions for frontline troops

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) have issued a fresh directive banning unauthorized smartphone use by troops stationed at the frontlines. Military authorities warn that improper use of mobile devices jeopardizes operational security and exposes soldiers to serious risks.

New security protocols unveiled

In an official statement released on July 9, acting FARDC spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay emphasized that smartphones can inadvertently reveal troop positions, movements, and operational details. Activated devices or careless usage may alert enemy forces, potentially triggering ambushes or coordinated attacks against military units.

“A single smartphone improperly used can compromise an entire unit,” warned the military spokesperson. “We are calling on all personnel to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to operational security protocols.”

Strict guidelines enforced

The new restrictions prohibit soldiers from:

• Sharing real-time positions, movements, or mission details
• Posting operational images or videos on social media or messaging platforms
• Using smartphones without explicit authorization in combat zones

The military command has urged troops to report any suspicious device usage or potential security breaches immediately. Failure to comply with these directives may result in disciplinary action.

Context and ongoing challenges

This crackdown follows a series of viral videos showing disgruntled soldiers criticizing conditions in eastern DRC’s conflict zones, particularly in Fizi and Mwenga territories of South Kivu Province. These areas remain contested between government forces and the AGC/M23 rebel group.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including when frontlines were closer to Goma. At that time, unauthorized social media posts compromised operational secrecy, leading to repeated warnings from military leadership about the dangers of digital indiscretions.

Call for heightened vigilance

The FARDC has reiterated its commitment to protecting both soldiers and national security. Authorities stress that maintaining operational secrecy is critical to defeating rebel groups threatening the country’s stability.

Military personnel are encouraged to prioritize mission success over personal communications and to remain vigilant against potential electronic surveillance by hostile forces.
