Jean Kaseya, the Director-General of Africa CDC, recently held a productive discussion with French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. This meeting occurred following the identification of an imported Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease case on French soil.

Mr. Kaseya expressed appreciation for France’s pledge that no travel restrictions would be implemented in response to this particular case, a crucial aspect for pan-African current affairs.

The individual concerned is a Congolese humanitarian doctor, who had been actively involved in the Ebola response efforts in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo, working with the NGO ALIMA. He tested positive for the virus upon his arrival in France, his usual country of residence. This marks the first confirmed Ebola case within French territory.

Africa CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), alongside French and Congolese authorities, remain steadfast in their commitment, Mr. Kaseya affirmed. Their collective objective is to effectively contain the Ebola epidemic, safeguard affected communities, and foster a robust, coordinated response on both continental and global fronts, impacting African news today and global health.
