French league financial watchdog imposes wage cap on Marseille and Lyon
The LFP’s financial control body has spelled out the restrictions both Olympique clubs must follow for the upcoming season.
Both clubs had been under close watch, and the decision has now been made. On Friday, the DNCG announced the limitations that Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais will have to adhere to during the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 campaign. For Marseille, the LFP’s financial control authority ruled for a “cap on the wage bill and transfer fees”.
Lyon, on the other hand, is also sanctioned with a “cap on the wage bill based on the recovery budget following the change of club control”. This announcement comes after the examination of club finances by the Professional Club Control Commission for the next season. During a press conference, Michele Kang confirmed that Lyon will remain in Ligue 1 and that she has become the majority shareholder of the Rhône-based team.
Marseille already penalised by UEFA
For Marseille, this decision comes less than ten days after UEFA imposed a €10 million fine for breaching financial fair play rules. The club knew it was in the crosshairs of French football’s financial watchdog.
The DNCG had announced on Tuesday that it had requested “additional information” from the Marseille club, whose finances were weakened by a difficult 2025-2026 season on all fronts. In 2021 and again in 2023, Marseille had already been subjected to a wage bill cap.
