Just after France’s national celebration, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu embarked on a two-day official visit to Morocco, marking a pivotal moment in revitalizing bilateral relations between the two nations. This trip follows a recent message from King Mohammed VI to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that Morocco and France have entered a new chapter aimed at transforming their exceptional partnership into a model for future cooperation. “This strategic alignment is designed to pave the way for a future royal visit to France, where a treaty formalizing this strengthened alliance will be signed,” highlighted local economic analysts.
For his inaugural official trip to the Kingdom since assuming office in 2025, Sébastien Lecornu arrived with a high-profile delegation of twelve ministers, including Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Laurent Nunez, Minister of the Interior. The French Prime Minister held a private meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, before jointly chairing a high-level summit. The discussions led to the signing of multiple bilateral agreements spanning critical sectors such as economy, migration, justice, and defense.
Economic cooperation took center stage, with a focus on co-development initiatives across Africa. Leveraging Morocco’s role as a key logistics and financial hub, businesses from both countries aim to develop joint ventures aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Kingdom’s robust trade growth, with intra-African exports surging by 20.7% in 2025, combined with its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), provides a secure framework for investments. “Amidst global geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s port infrastructure has emerged as a strategically vital alternative for trade routes connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa,” noted industry observers.
The visit also underscored shared security priorities for both nations. Paris and Rabat are deeply concerned about the escalating instability in the Sahel region, where porous borders and rising terrorism pose significant threats. By enhancing their security and migration coordination, France and Morocco are committed to giving tangible substance to their exceptional partnership, aspiring to elevate it to new heights.
