Legal action taken against ousmane sonko over touba remarks

A legal complaint has been filed with the Public Prosecutor at the Dakar High Court against Ousmane Sonko, the former Prime Minister, current National Assembly President, and leader of the PASTEF party. The complaint was lodged by a collective of descendants of Serigne Touba, who are seeking an investigation into remarks made by Mr. Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters.

According to the complainants, Sonko stated that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba.” The group claims these statements have tarnished the honor, reputation, and dignity of Touba, a revered spiritual center in Senegal.

The descendants, identifying themselves as Senegalese citizens, young intellectuals, and economic operators, argue that the remarks are unfounded and damaging. In their formal complaint, they request that the Prosecutor:

  • Initiate an official investigation into the matter.
  • Summon Ousmane Sonko to clarify the meaning of his statements and provide evidence supporting his claims.
  • Conduct all necessary inquiries to verify the truthfulness or baselessness of the allegations.
