Lindsey Heaps, who momentarily believed she had opened the scoring in the Champions League final, ultimately concluded her European campaign with a defeat against FC Barcelona. The midfielder will not participate in the competition again as she prepares for her move to Denver next week.
Just three weeks prior, Heaps had felt she accomplished the hardest part by quickly putting OL Lyonnes ahead against Arsenal, only for VAR to intervene and rule otherwise. That decision, however, did not alter the positive outcome of that particular encounter. Fast forward three weeks, and Lindsey Heaps experienced another emotional rollercoaster in Oslo. Roughly fifteen minutes into the final, the American star was convinced she had put the Fenottes on the right track, reacting swiftly to a parried header from Wendie Renard. She wasn’t alone in her belief, but once more, video assistance intervened, disallowing the goal for offside. By a mere few centimeters, the narrative of the Champions League final could have unfolded quite differently, leading to a far more joyous conclusion for OL Lyonnes and Heaps.
“Proud to have been part of this club”
At the final whistle, the midfielder understandably felt the weight of the moment. Beyond suffering a second continental final loss after 2024, the Lyon number 10 was bidding farewell to the prestigious competition. With her transfer to Denver slated for this summer, Lindsey Heaps had hoped to cap her tenure with a second European triumph, echoing their 2022 success. This aspiration, however, went unfulfilled for the American national team captain. “Football is football, and sometimes things don’t go as you want. I’ve played in many finals, won some and lost others. All credit goes to Barça. They are one of the best teams in the world, and it’s always a pleasure to measure ourselves against them. Above all, I am proud of our team, proud of this club, and proud to have represented OL Lyonnes,” she reflected after the match.
Lindsey Heaps now has one final match remaining, on Friday against Paris FC, to conclude her illustrious Lyon journey with a potential ninth title.
