Olympique Lyonnais sought to delay their Ligue 1 season opener against Toulouse, scheduled for August 22, but the Ligue de Football Professionnel refused the request.

Olympique Lyonnais finds itself in a scheduling dilemma as its first Ligue 1 fixture clashes with potential UEFA Champions League qualifying matches. The club requested the postponement of the August 22 away game against Toulouse, citing the packed calendar. However, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) declined the proposal.

The Lyon-based club is set to begin their Champions League campaign in early August, with a potential third qualifying round matchup. If they advance, they could face additional midweek fixtures in the play-off rounds, sandwiched between Ligue 1 matches. This mirrors the requests made by Paris Saint-Germain and Racing Strasbourg in the previous season. Despite the club’s strategic concerns, the LFP remains firm on maintaining the integrity of the league’s opening weekend.

Ligue 1 kicks off as planned

The LFP’s board, which convened via videoconference on Monday evening, officially denied Olympique Lyonnais’ request. The governing body emphasized that no disruptions would be tolerated for the season’s inaugural matchday. Notably, next season’s Ligue 1 will be fully broadcast on Ligue 1+, ensuring unprecedented visibility.

In the event Lyon qualifies for the Champions League play-offs, they will have to navigate their Ligue 1 debut at Toulouse between European fixtures—a logistical challenge the LFP has opted not to accommodate.
