Mali: a propaganda video unveils jnim’s evolving strategic approach

A recent propaganda video released by the armed group JNIM, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, offers a stark illustration of the attack carried out on April 25 against the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a critical location near Mopti in central Mali.

This assault on Sévaré was not an isolated incident but formed part of a series of synchronized attacks targeting various Malian towns. These operations were orchestrated by JNIM jihadists alongside Tuareg separatists from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).

According to analyst Bakary Sambe, who directs the Timbuktu Institute, this propaganda material serves to underscore the significant strategic evolutions unfolding within JNIM.

“JNIM has demonstrated its capability to penetrate urban environments and highly strategic zones, such as the airport and military camp in Sévaré,” Mr. Sambe observed. “This also raises concerns for both the Malian army and its Russian allies.”

The coordinated attacks launched in April led to the recapture of the city of Kidal by separatist forces and tragically resulted in the assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, near Bamako. Additionally, these incidents left 16 individuals wounded, as reported by the Malian government.

“What JNIM has successfully achieved is to gradually entrench Mali in a state that is neither peace nor war. Within this ambiguity, they are deploying an increasingly offensive strategy,” Bakary Sambe explained. He further highlighted the emergence of key figures, such as Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespersons, as part of an effort to establish the group “as a legitimate political actor.”

The release of this propaganda video coincides with an announcement from Malian authorities, who have offered rewards for any information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders. This initiative underscores the ongoing counter-terrorism strategy against the group in a bid to restore stability in the region.
