Malian military forces have confirmed the neutralization of a prominent jihadist figure affiliated with the JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) in Mali’s central region. This decisive action follows the government’s recent announcement of unprecedented financial rewards for information leading to the capture or location of wanted armed group leaders.
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) declared on Sunday, June 14, the successful elimination of a jihadist commander, identified as a key operative within the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
According to an official statement from the General Staff, the individual, who operated under the aliases Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, perished during a drone strike executed on June 3rd. The operation took place in Mougnan, a settlement approximately forty kilometers from Djenné, deep in the nation’s central territory.
Malian authorities have identified him as a former member of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), who, over time, ascended to become an influential leader within various jihadist factions active across Mali and the broader Sahelian region.
A major player in jihadist networks
Military intelligence indicates that the neutralized commander previously held command responsibilities in the Serma zone. Subsequently, he oversaw armed operations across several areas within the Sikasso and Koutiala regions, extending his influence into parts of neighboring Burkina Faso.
The General Staff assessed his role as pivotal in coordinating networks affiliated with JNIM, the primary jihadist coalition operating throughout the Sahel, known for its ties to Al-Qaïda.
Bamako hardens its security strategy
This significant announcement comes merely days after a groundbreaking policy shift by Malian authorities. On June 4th, the government implemented a reward system offering financial incentives of up to two billion CFA francs for actionable intelligence leading to the discovery or apprehension of several prominent armed and terrorist group leaders.
The highest bounty has been specifically placed on Iyad Ag Ghali, widely recognized as the nation’s most wanted individual.
This latest operation underscores Bamako’s heightened military pressure against jihadist groups. It unfolds amidst a backdrop of escalating armed attacks and persistent security challenges plaguing numerous regions across Mali and the wider Sahel, making it a critical development in pan-African current affairs.
