Niamey is hosting high-level discussions on the future of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), with Niger taking a leading role in shaping the bureau’s evolving mandate. The country’s perspectives on regional stability and development were at the center of a strategic meeting between Dr. Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, President of the National Advisory Council for Refoundation (CCR), and Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia and head of the UNOWAS Independent Strategic Review.
Niger champions sovereign-driven refoundation at UNOWAS talks
The CCR President outlined his institution’s vision for strengthening Niger’s national sovereignty, deepening social cohesion, and fostering lasting peace—key pillars in addressing the Sahel’s complex challenges. During the meeting, he emphasized how these priorities align with broader regional stability and conflict prevention efforts across West Africa and the Sahel.
UNOWAS review seeks adaptive solutions for a transformed region
Sahle-Work Zewde’s visit forms part of an Independent Strategic Review aimed at reassessing UNOWAS’s effectiveness and proposing adjustments to its mission in response to shifting regional dynamics. The review responds to escalating security threats, political transitions, humanitarian crises, and development demands reshaping the Sahel’s landscape.
At the close of the discussions, the Ethiopian stateswoman commended Niger’s leadership and the substance of the exchanges. She confirmed that insights gathered from national institutions would directly inform the review’s findings and help shape the future direction of UNOWAS.
Diplomatic engagement prioritizes national sovereignty and mutual respect
The Niamey meeting underscores Niger’s commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue with international partners while upholding its core diplomatic principles.
