Olympique de Marseille captivates Abidjan with high-profile pre-season tour
The Olympique de Marseille (OM) wrapped up a three-day preparatory tour in Abidjan this Saturday, July 18, following its arrival in Côte d’Ivoire on July 15. Led by coach Bruno Genesio, the French delegation included 80 members, with 24 players making the trip to West Africa.
The highlight of the visit came on Friday, July 17, when OM faced Yamoussoukro FC at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium. The match against the newly promoted Ligue 1 Ivoirienne side provided a rare opportunity for the club from the country’s interior to test itself against a top-tier European team. Earlier in the week, OM had conducted a public training session at the same venue, with striker Faris Moumbagna leading drills.
Diplomatic and sporting synergy behind the tour
The OM’s visit is far more than a routine pre-season stop—it’s a strategic initiative under the Sublime Côte d’Ivoire partnership, renewed in April 2026 and extended through 2029. This collaboration, involving three Ivoirian ministries, injects nearly 5 million euros annually into the club’s budget, transforming a sporting event into a national showcase of tourism, culture, and diplomacy.
On July 14, Tourism Minister Siandou Fofana, Culture Minister Françoise Remarck, and Sports Minister Adjé Silas Metch jointly held a press conference to underline the significance of the event. The Ministry of Tourism had already announced the club’s arrival on social media, signaling the government’s full commitment to leveraging the visit for broader national exposure.
Beyond the pitch: social engagement and national pride
OM’s itinerary extended beyond training sessions and the high-profile match. As part of the tour, players were scheduled to visit children in difficult situations in Abidjan, reinforcing the club’s social responsibility while strengthening ties with local communities. These off-field activities underscore Côte d’Ivoire’s broader strategy of using sporting events to enhance its international image and promote social cohesion.
A landmark partnership for Ivoirian football
This engagement is the latest chapter in Côte d’Ivoire’s long-term effort to position itself as a hub for international football tourism. The OM partnership, now lasting until 2029, stands out as one of the most visible symbols of this strategy. For Yamoussoukro FC, the match represented a historic moment—its first-ever clash with a French top-flight team, offering exposure that transcends the usual Abidjan-centric spotlight of Ivoirian football.
Stéphane Richard’s leadership takes center stage
Newly appointed OM president Stéphane Richard, who officially took office on July 2, 2026, accompanied the team to Côte d’Ivoire. His presence alongside coach Bruno Genesio marked one of his first international appearances since assuming leadership, signaling a fresh direction for the club both on and off the field. The delegation is set to return to France on Saturday, concluding a tour that blended athletic preparation with cultural diplomacy and strategic partnership building.
