Opposition unites against Senegal government after sonko ruling

Opposition Coalition Calls for United Front Following Constitutional Council’s Ruling

The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has sharply criticized the Constitutional Council’s decision to reinstate Ousmane Sonko as a member of the National Assembly. In a statement released on Thursday, the opposition alliance argued that the ruling does nothing to resolve the ongoing political dispute surrounding Sonko’s return to his parliamentary seat.

The FDR acknowledged the Council’s stance on its lack of jurisdiction over the allegations of misconduct raised by challengers. However, the coalition emphasized that this stance does not invalidate the broader objections to Sonko’s reinstatement as leader of the Pastef party.

In its statement, the FDR accused both Ousmane Sonko and the ruling party of fostering an environment of incompetence and arrogance within the country. The alliance also took issue with recent remarks made by Sonko in interviews with international media outlets, describing them as a distorted portrayal of national identity.

Warnings of Democratic Backsliding in Senegal

The coalition described Senegal’s current political climate as deeply troubling, warning of what it characterized as dangerous deviations by the government. While reaffirming its commitment to working within the framework of republican institutions and legal principles, the FDR vowed to continue its efforts to hold authorities accountable.

A Call for Collective Opposition

Beyond the Sonko case, the FDR issued a rallying cry for political and social forces opposed to the administration to unite. The alliance extended its invitation to political parties, civil society organizations, labor unions, youth movements, and democrats at large, urging them to mobilize and form a broad coalition. The goal, as outlined in the statement, is to present a viable alternative to the current leadership.

The FDR’s statement came shortly after the Constitutional Council’s decision, which dismissed legal challenges to the process that allowed Sonko to reclaim his parliamentary mandate. This ruling effectively ended the opposition’s legal battle over the matter.
