Four days after being dismissed as Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko has been elected Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly.

Ousmane Sonko, leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF)—the ruling party—secured 132 votes out of 133 cast, ascending to the position vacated by El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of monitoring, guiding, and evaluating the Senegal 2050 National Transformation Program at the presidency, before taking on the role of Secretary-General of the government.
