Ousmane Sonko has been overwhelmingly re-elected as leader of his party, Pastef, during its congress on Saturday. Removed from the position of Prime Minister two weeks ago by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the former head of government, now President of the National Assembly, used the occasion to further assert his role as an opposition figure to the head of state. With a majority in parliament, Pastef “will ensure that the interests of the people are safeguarded,” Sonko stated.
