Pioneering agricultural engineering training blossoms in Togo

The Scientific Group SIGMA in Togo and France’s École Supérieure des Agricultures (ESA) have embarked on a significant new chapter in their academic collaboration. On Monday, June 15, 2026, in Lomé, the two esteemed institutions formally established a strategic partnership designed to elevate the training of aspiring agricultural engineers in Togo.

This groundbreaking alliance will materialize with the inauguration of a Scientific Preparatory Class, tailored for young science baccalaureate graduates, commencing in the 2026-2027 academic year.

A new pathway to excellence for science graduates

Unveiled during a press briefing with media professionals, this innovative educational offering aims to equip students for advanced studies in agricultural engineering. It directly addresses the escalating demands within the agricultural sector across Togo and the broader West African sub-region.

Both institutions share a common vision: to cultivate professionals adept at navigating and driving the agricultural, food, and environmental transformations that are critical for Africa’s future.

“Connecting excellence to the land”

Dr. Ingénieur Beaugrain Domongue, Director of Development and Foresight for the Scientific Group SIGMA, articulated the profound vision underpinning this initiative. He views it as a crucial step towards modernizing the agricultural sector through the strategic application of science and innovation.

“Our aim is to connect excellence to the land, bolster the innovative potential of our producers, and harness knowledge to advance our food sovereignty,” Dr. Domongue affirmed. He further emphasized that this collaboration between SIGMA and ESA represents a significant advancement in Togo’s higher education landscape.

ESA’s pedagogical expertise deployed

As part of this cooperative framework, the École Supérieure des Agricultures will lend its extensive pedagogical expertise. This includes providing comprehensive training frameworks, enhancing the capabilities of local educators, and participating actively in academic juries.

The partnership also features an annual “Summer Workshop” hosted at ESA’s campus in Angers, France. This invaluable opportunity offers students international exposure and an immersive experience within a globally recognized academic environment.

The curriculum places strong emphasis on life sciences, agriculture, environmental studies, food systems, and technological innovation, leveraging the renowned active teaching methodologies for which the French institution is celebrated.

A five-year journey to become an agricultural engineer

The preparatory training spans two academic years, focusing on strengthening scientific knowledge and building foundational understanding in agriculture, livestock management, and food science.

Upon successful completion of this initial phase, students will transition into ESA’s three-year engineering cycle. This rigorous pathway culminates in the conferral of an agricultural engineer diploma.

This new specialized program is specifically designed to address the escalating demand for experts capable of guiding the ongoing transformations within the agricultural sector and significantly contributing to the enhancement of food sovereignty across Africa.
