Expected to succeed Gianluigi Donnarumma as PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier ultimately lost his starting role mid-season to Matvey Safonov. However, club officials have reportedly decided against parting ways with the French shot-stopper.

Last summer, PSG was relatively quiet in the transfer market but still made a significant change. Gianluigi Donnarumma, after a strong second half of the season, left the club and was replaced by Lucas Chevalier, who arrived from Lille for around €40 million, excluding bonuses. The French goalkeeper was hailed as the long-term number one in Paris, but after a disappointing start, he quickly lost his place to Matvey Safonov.
PSG decides to keep Lucas Chevalier
Indeed, the Russian international has held onto his spot since displacing Chevalier and led the club to a back-to-back Champions League title. This might suggest an uncertain future for the former Lille man, but the club has decided to retain him this summer. A transfer of Lucas Chevalier is therefore not planned, as he has apparently convinced the PSG staff with his attitude and the signals sent during the second part of the season.
A young goalkeeper arrives
Meanwhile, PSG is preparing for the future in goal. Italian teenager Alessandro Longoni, 18, will join the capital club on a free transfer from AC Milan. He will compensate for the departure of Renato Marin, who will be loaned for one season to CD Nacional, currently in the Portuguese top flight. In other words, while Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier will still compete for the starting spot next season, in the long run Alessandro Longoni and Renato Marin could eventually replace them.
