The Senate of the Democratic Republic of Congo has initiated its second reading of a pivotal legislative proposal concerning the framework for organizing referendums across the nation. Senate President Sama Lukonde formally announced this development during a plenary session held on Wednesday, June 10, confirming the bill’s transmission from the National Assembly.

This critical text, which outlines the specific conditions for conducting a referendum in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been forwarded to the Political, Administrative and Legal Commission (PAJ) for comprehensive review. The commission has been granted a strict three-day timeframe to submit its detailed report on the proposed legislation.

Originally introduced in the National Assembly, this significant bill was championed by National Deputy Paul-Gaspard Ngondankoy, who represents the Yahuma territory within the Tshopo province.

The lower house of Parliament previously endorsed this proposal with overwhelming support on May 9. Out of 351 deputies participating in the vote, 348 cast their ballots in favor of its adoption, while only two opposed it, and one abstained.
