In Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, surveillance cameras have become a cornerstone of urban safety, deterring crime, protecting assets, and optimizing traffic flow across the city.
How surveillance cameras are reshaping security in Yaoundé
A resident of the Madison district shared a striking before-and-after perspective: «Before the cameras were installed, our neighborhood was plagued by armed robberies. Criminals struck at any hour, targeting shops, banks, and bakeries with impunity. Now, their presence has dwindled dramatically. I owe a debt of gratitude to the city authorities for this transformative change.»
The surveillance network in Yaoundé is overseen by the National Command Center for Video Surveillance, headquartered in the Etoudi district. This centralized system has proven instrumental in reducing criminal activity and enhancing public safety.
Government commitment fuels nationwide expansion
Recognizing the success of the initiative, the President of Cameroon signed a decree on December 17, 2025, authorizing Minister of Economy Alamine Ousmane Mey to secure an additional loan of 39.2 billion FCFA. These funds will support the national expansion of the intelligent urban video surveillance system, reinforcing security infrastructure across the country.
Over the past eight years, the project has secured a total of 150.8 billion FCFA in financing from three Chinese development partners. The first phase alone saw the installation of 1,500 surveillance cameras in key Cameroonian cities, complemented by 2,000 portable walkie-talkies to bolster police response capabilities.
Beyond city limits: surveillance in homes and businesses
While urban centers and sensitive border areas benefit from this technology, private homes, businesses, and even schools are increasingly adopting surveillance systems. One homeowner in Yaoundé explained, «I used to fall victim to burglaries regularly. After installing a camera system, I feel completely secure. Any intruder is immediately identified, and justice takes swift action.»
Surveillance cameras are also deployed in plantations, vehicles, and public spaces. Prices vary depending on the model, with basic units starting around 15,000 FCFA. Remote monitoring is possible via smartphones, smart TVs, and other digital platforms, giving residents and business owners real-time control over their spaces.
