Dakar’s mayoral race heats up

Dr. Arona Coumba Ndoffène Diouf has thrown his hat into the ring for Dakar’s mayoral seat. A former advisor to former President Macky Sall and member of the Kiiraay party, Diouf announced his candidacy in a televised interview on 9 October 2026. His vision for Dakar includes modernization inspired by global models, aiming to position the capital as a leading urban center in West Africa.

In the Dakar suburb of Pikine, political ambition is also on full display. Deputy Babacar Ndiaye of the Pastef party declared his candidacy as early as January 2026, though his final nomination hinges on internal party decisions led by Ousmane Sonko. Meanwhile, Dr. Cheikh Dieng, former director-general of Senegal’s National Sanitation Office (ONAS), secured backing from the Diomaye Président coalition in May 2026 to run in Pikine. This move underscores the coalition’s strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.

Contenders emerge in other key municipalities

In Matam, Souleymane Barka Ba took a significant step forward on 10 October 2026 by accepting his nomination as the local candidate for the « Sénégal d’abord » movement. His candidacy reflects broader efforts by political actors to mobilize support ahead of the elections. In Hann Bel-Air, Matar Diaw, a deputy mayor, announced his bid in August 2026 under the « Maire Matar Horizon 2027 » banner, positioning himself against the incumbent team led by Babacar Mbengue.

In Ogo, Matam region, Professor Abdoulaye Baïla Ndiaye entered the fray on 21 September 2026 with a platform centered on education, environment, health, water access, and municipal modernization. These declarations, while significant, do not yet constitute an official candidate list. Formal candidacies remain subject to validation by electoral authorities, with the final lists expected no later than 70 days before the polls.

What’s next for Senegal’s local elections

The upcoming local elections will renew the councils elected in January 2022, with Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô confirming 17 January 2027 as the voting date. While this provides a framework, the official call to the electorate and operational details must still be formalized through regulatory acts. Political parties and coalitions now face the task of finalizing their slates and building local alliances to sway voters.

For aspiring candidates, the next phase involves solidifying their ambitions with well-defined municipal projects and structured teams. The window for declarations remains open, and declarations are expected to multiply in the coming months as the electoral landscape takes shape.
