Senegal-Politics-Institutions
Dakar, 29 June – Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, described the constitutional revision adopted on Monday by majority deputies as “one of the most consolidating reforms because it helps perfect Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management.”
“This [constitutional] reform is one of the most consolidating, allowing us to take giant steps in perfecting Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management,” he stated.
Sonko chaired the plenary session reviewing Bill No. 17/2026 on constitutional revision, an initiative by deputies from the Pastef-Les patriotes parliamentary group.
The parliamentary leader announced that the adopted text would be sent to the head of state “for further action.”
“I will not invoke Article 103. I will ask the president of the Republic to promulgate this law, simply and purely, because the Constitutional Council, whose decisions are binding on all public, administrative, and political authorities, simultaneously validates both adoption and approval,” he explained.
According to him, the vote on the bill marks the end of the adoption process for this important document.
Ousmane Sonko gave a historical overview of the revision process, which began several years ago.
“The amendments just incorporated into the Constitution have traversed the entire political journey of our commitments,” he added.
“Dialogue is important, but it is not institutional. That dialogue has existed,” said Sonko.
The president of the Republic had called for political dialogue, in which Pastef-Les patriotes participated alongside many other political parties and organisations of all stripes, recalled Ousmane Sonko.
He did not fail to congratulate the deputies who sponsored this constitutional revision, “consistent with what emerged from the dialogue.”
Regarding the declaration of assets, the former prime minister assured that he would carry out this exercise very soon after leaving the head of government.
“I declared my assets as prime minister. I have three months to make another declaration upon leaving. And I will declare next week,” announced Ousmane Sonko.
